Review by Barby

Full disclosure, I almost quit on this when I first started it.  I found Abe really interesting, and the entire premise of a fishing horror story completely undone before, but it seemed the book was walking where I wanted to run.  A friend recommended I keep with it, let it get where it needs to go, and I’d say I’m glad I did.

This is a beautifully written story, first of all.  The prose is laid out masterfully.  It’s clear that the author knows how to tell a poetic tale, whilst not losing sight of the complex plot.  That deserves a round of applause on its own.

To dig deeper into said plot, be ready for a wild ride.  Though one novel, there is far more than just one story here.  The amount of twists and turns can be quite dizzying, but I promise, they lead you to a place you won’t ever forget.  Are you afraid of what lurks in the depths of the water?  If not, you might find yourself as such after reading this.

Abe and his newfound, though unlikely, friend Dan want to go fishing at a new spot…. A spot called Dutchman’s Creek.  After losing both their wives and Dan losing his whole family, they are sort of brothers in grieving who have found an odd peace in casting their rods together.   But the history behind the creek is rich with legend and lore…. Not that they’d let it deter them…. Right?

I firmly believe reading this can sharpen one’s mind and, if you can stick with it, be a rewarding experience.  It does have its dull moments (and several instances of over descriptiveness) but the beautiful writing and payoffs all make it worthwhile.
